About the Learning Community

The Tropical Marine Learning Community at Unity College combines two advanced courses: BI 3883 Tropical Marine Ecology (taught by Professor Emma Creaser) and EH 3213 Writing the Sea (taught by Professor Kathryn Miles).  Throughout the semester, students have been studying theories of coral formation, Caribbean ecology, and science writing genres ranging from environmental journalism to nonprofit and governmental writing.  The culmination of this experience is an 8-day field course at the Institute for Tropical Marine Ecology just north of the capital of Dominica, Roseau.  While at ITME, members of the community will conduct research and exploration, visit the various landscapes on island, and explore Dominican history and culture.

Unity College is a small private college in rural Maine that provides dedicated, engaged students with a liberal arts education which emphasizes the environment and natural resources.  Unity College graduates are prepared to be environmental stewards, effective leaders, and responsible citizens through active learning experiences within a supportive community.
